Exercise

I work out 3x a week.

I speedwalk (not allowed to run per dr's orders) on the treadmill.

I sweat on the elliptical machine.

I can walk 1 1/2 miles in under 18 minutes.

Good workouts right?

I bought a bike last week.

The muscles you use to walk and glide on the elliptical are not the same muscles you use to pedal.

Did you know that?

Cuz I didn't.

My legs hurt.

My butt hurts worse.

Those bike seats are tiny.

Why don't they make a normal-woman-butt size seats?

I've got meat on my bones.

I like the meat on my bones.

I earned the meat on my bones.

Why don't the bike manufacturers recognize that a normal sized woman today isn't a toothpick and build an appropriate bike seat.

Sure would make my butt feet better.

Actually, there are special seats made for women that allow for a wider distance between the hip bones. Perhaps they didn't have one at your store. But I'll bet you can get one on line.

Your comments about using different muscles are the very reason why we should switch up our exercise routines from time to time. I went from doing a step aerobics tape with weight lifting 5 days a week to a kick-boxing aerobics and could hardly walk the first couple of weeks. I'm sure your cardiac conditioning is excellent; you just need to work on the bike and you'll be fine. Good work on keeping fit!

Kathy is right - I've got a "woman's seat" on my bike. It's wider and a bit softer. The reason they make regular bike seats so narrow is to have less resistance for long distance riders. A wider seat will slow a rider down over distance because the back of the leg is constantly hitting the wide part of the seat. If you only ride 5-10 miles at a time, this is not an issue for you.

Unfortunately, they don't put the wider seat on the bikes - they assume you will ask for it and pay extra if you want a different one. In any case - I can guarantee your butt would still hurt since you aren't used to sitting on a bike. Do invest in a pair of bike shorts with padding - it's worth it!

Ouch! This just proves that no good deed goes unpunished. *grin*

It's been a while since I upgraded a bike, but I'm pretty sure that they still make both wide, padded seats, and cushy-gel seat covers.

Either of those might help.

Here's a wide one with shock-absorbing springs. I used to have one like it and it was quite comfy.

And here's a very informative article on bicycle seat comfort in general:

One thing about sitting on too-small seats is that it can make you numb "down there," especially if you lean forward rather than site upright. That was the main reason I stopped riding for more than 10 minutes at a time. I like being able to feel the sensations.

I hate bike riding. Most everyone that I am close with is or has been an avid bike rider. Uhm, not me. Maybe when I was 10. But the last time that I rode a bike, I almost crashed like 800 times, had a heart attack, and had to call a cab. Maybe a COUCH with pedals, but that's about IT.
