Stupid law!
Me and my mom went to the grocery store today pick up a few groceries and a 12-pack of her beer. Only to be told in the checkout line that we couldn't buy beer today because it was Tuesday, election day. Some stupid Georgia law says that you can't buy beer within so many feet of a polling booth.
How many ways of stupid is that?
Has anyone else heard of this in their state?

It's a somewhat improved archaic law - believe it or not. It used to be that you couldn't buy liquor at all on voting day!
Every state has it's very weird rules. Here in the people's republic of MA - you can only buy alcohol in certain stores - special liquor stores. And they are having an absolute conniption because of a question on the ballot about selling wine in grocery stores - to the point of putting ads on television with lies in them. (saying - if this law passes kids will be able to get hold of beer in convenience stores... wha???)
Anyhow, that's one thing I miss about Chicago - you could buy anything any time of the day or night in the grocery store from beer to hard liquor. Less trips out of your way to special stores. I love convenience!
I don't know of any such law in Texas, but there is a "blue law" about permitted hours for buying liquor on Sunday in my area. I think the law you were describing is meant to keep office-seekers from buying people beers on the promise of voting for him/her. (Kind of like buying the vote.)
